The Tricky Space
After a full-home renovation several years ago, my clients had beautifully updated every space — except their daughter’s room. Now 8 years old, she had been patiently asking for a refresh, and her parents were finally ready to tackle the last room left behind.
Finding a designer who truly understood kids’ spaces felt like a challenge — until they found me!
The room came with its quirks: a small footprint and no existing closet, making storage a top priority. Their daughter is a collector at heart, with beloved trinkets, notes, photos and a growing stuffie collection that all needed a thoughtful home.
She also has a deep love for nature, especially mushrooms and crystals, which we wanted to weave into the design in a way that felt magical but still elevated.
With a tricky layout and big dreams, this space needed smart solutions to make it both highly functional and uniquely hers.
The Transformation
This room had so much untapped potential, but smart layout planning was key to making it work. The biggest challenge was maximizing storage for clothing, trinkets, notes and stuffies — without making the small room feel overwhelmed.
The solution? A large custom built-in wall unit that created 6X the storage capacity while giving everything a dedicated home. One of my favourite details is the hidden-yet-accessible stuffie storage, tucked into an otherwise unusable nook between the bed and wall unit.
A large desk with built-in storage created a dedicated spot for creativity and homework, while an upholstered bed and chair kept the room comfortable and easy to navigate in a smaller footprint — no banged elbows!
To bring in her love of nature and whimsical details, we layered organic textures, rounded edges and playful-but-elevated pieces throughout the room. A wispy petal pendant, mushroom lamp, cozy pebbled rug, playful accent pillows and stunning pencil-sketch forest wallpaper bring in plenty of personality without feeling too young.
A palette of soothing sage green — her favourite colour — and warm golden natural tones ties it all together, creating a whimsical, elevated space that finally feels completely hers — and one she can grow into for years to come.
