the tricky space

My client had just moved into their new home and, with winter fast approaching, she knew she needed an intentional play space in the basement for her two kiddos.

Her vision? A large active play zone where her little ones could safely burn off energy, balanced with quieter areas for pretend play, arts and crafts, and curling up with a good book, all activities that her kids loved!

The space had so much potential, but she felt unsure of where to start or how to bring it all together in a way that felt cohesive and beautiful.

the transformation

For this basement playroom, I wanted to maximize the large open space by the door, transforming it into an active play zone that encourages movement and fun. I framed the window with a SWEDISH LADDER on one side and a CLIMBING WALL on the other, creating a striking focal point. To anchor the space, I added a BASKETBALL NET and low, accessible ball holders, allowing the kids to easily initiate their own play. The ceiling was reinforced to support MONKEY BARS, ensuring safe weight-bearing for swinging and climbing. For soft, safe landings, I designed a drop zone with a FOAM PIT and a play couch, while a beautiful SLIDE completes this active play zone.

Along one of the longer walls, I created a versatile PRETEND PLAY zone featuring a market stand and play kitchen, perfect for sparking imaginative play. Since her kids also love dress-up, I included a charming DRESS-UP NOOK complete with a vanity and costume hooks. To encourage creativity and quiet moments, I added a MAGNETIC ART WALL and book ledges for a cozy READING NOOK.

Finally, the family lounge area was wallpapered with a stunning terracotta pencil sketch design, adding a tasteful yet playful pop of colour to tie the space together.

This playroom is designed to grow with the kids, combining active play, creativity, and comfort into a space the entire family can enjoy.
