The Tricky Space

This was the last space in the house to get its makeover — and for good reason.

The basement was small, but the family had a big wish list. They wanted a space for playdates, family hangouts and movie nights, plus dedicated spots for arts and crafts, toys, puzzles and artwork. And, of course, there needed to be plenty of room for active play.

The challenge was making it all work in one compact basement without the space feeling cramped or chaotic.

The Transformation

The key was a thoughtful layout that gave every activity its place while keeping the room feeling open and inviting.

We created a true family hangout with a sofa big enough for everyone to pile onto for movie nights, paired with a storage coffee table that keeps everyday essentials close at hand. Arts and crafts got their own dedicated workstations, while a mix of toy and puzzle storage keeps the playroom functional without putting everything on display.

For active play, we packed a lot into a small footprint — monkey bars, a rock wall, disc and trapeze swings, and a foam pit create plenty of opportunities to climb, swing and move. Playful details like the dollhouse and map artwork add a little whimsy and make the room feel personal.

The result is a basement that finally earns its square footage — a hardworking family space where playdates, movie nights, creative projects and active play can all happen under one roof.
