β€œIt’s her favourite room in the house. She takes everyone up to show them her new room. Greatest gift I gave her ever.”

The Tricky Space

My 4-year-old client had moved out of her crib and onto a floor bed, but something about the layout just wasn’t working. The 10’ x 12’ room, combined with the closet door clearance, made it tricky to balance functionality, flow and a cozy feel.

She loved being independent and choosing her own clothes, as well as books, pink and all things princess. Her family was ready for a redesign that would not only work better, but finally feel like her.

The Transformation

Because the goal was to create a room that could grow with her through the tween β€” and even teen β€” years, I started with the biggest piece: her big-kid bed. We chose one with built-in storage and placed it across from the closet doors, which opened up two entire walls for intentional storage and organization.

One wall became a self-care zone, with a dresser, accessible wall hooks and a mirror to support body awareness and independent dressing. On the other, a low, open bookcase gives her easy access to toys, books and favourite trinkets. And in the corner, two floor baskets for all her stuffie friends.

And then came the princess magic! A ribbon-crown cornice with tulle canopy panels, scalloped curtains, crystal flower light fixtures, golden bowtie wall hooks and dreamy watercolour floral wallpaper bring in all the whimsy she loves β€” while keeping the overall design sophisticated enough to grow with her.
