The Tricky Space
My clientβs basement had slowly become a dumping ground for things that didnβt have a place to go. Over time, it became the room no one wanted to be in.
The problem? Underutilized space, no real purpose and no reason for the family to gather.
The goal was to completely reimagine the basement into a functional, inviting space that would grow with the kids β creating opportunities for active play, creativity, quiet time and family connection for years to come.
The Transformation
I wanted every element of the space to work hard and evolve with the family. The active-play zone was designed with multiple ways to move, climb and challenge themselves as they grow, including monkey bars that run up and across the space, a triangle climber, rock wall, disc swing and sensory swing. Traditional swings accommodate both big and little sister, while crash pads provide a soft landing zone for all the action.
For quieter moments, I added a cozy reading nook, kidsβ art wall and adjustable activity table with legs that can grow with them over the next 5β10 years. Grown-up seating makes the space just as inviting for parents, whether theyβre joining in on the fun or simply hanging out nearby.
Along the long side wall, we created a 10+ ft built-in wall unit to provide much-needed storage and contain the inevitable toy overflow. A magnetic chalkboard adds another creative outlet, while a dedicated workstation features a sit-stand desk that works equally well for kids and grown-ups. Under-cabinet task lighting makes the space practical for everything from homework to creative projects.
The result is a basement that finally has a purpose β and a lot more life.
And perhaps the best proof of the transformation? The kids now ask to go to the basement first thing in the morning.
