The Tricky Space
With two little ones, ages 4 and 2, my clients wanted their basement to become a dedicated destination for active play, while still having a comfortable place for the whole family to gather and hang out.
The challenge was that the basement is actually two connected rooms, with a glass-door gym off to the side that needed to remain easily accessible. And while the family wanted plenty of opportunities for climbing, swinging and jumping, the ceiling height wasnβt especially generous.
The space needed to fit a lot of active-play elements without feeling chaotic β and, most importantly, needed to create a natural flow that would invite kids of different ages to explore and move.
The Transformation
Instead of fighting the lower ceiling height, I used the existing dropped ceiling bulkheads to our advantage. Mounting the climbing and swinging elements lower to the ground not only made the most of the space, but created a safer setup for little bodies. Along one side, ceiling-mounted monkey bars run the length of the bulkhead, with a custom upholstered foam pit underneath creating a soft landing zone for kids jumping from the upper level of the playhouse.
From there, the active play continues in a loop. A rope wall and rock wall offer different ways to climb, while a series of swing attachments β including a triangle climber, trapeze, sensory swing, disc swing and regular swing β create a continuous circuit of movement and exploration.
The two-storey playhouse anchors the space, with a cozy upper level featuring two openings for climbing or jumping and a lower level designed for quieter moments. A kid-accessible wall sconce lets them control their own lighting, while the connected lounge room gives them a place to slow down and recharge.
I wanted the second room to feel equally inviting for kids and grown-ups, so we repurposed the familyβs existing blue sofa and layered in playful artwork and two hanging egg chairs. A large coffee table with built-in drawer storage anchors the lounge and keeps toys and essentials tucked away, while protective foam padding behind the chairs helps keep the walls safe during all the action.
The result is a playful, energetic little world designed for movement, imagination and connection β with plenty of places to climb, swing, jump, lounge and simply hang out together.
